9 2013 at 6:00 AM Photo courtesy of Doonya You can dance to Bollywood music too! All it takes is one hour of a K-pop dance class, surrounded a room of high school students who must have already practiced the music video routine in their parents' living rooms, to confirm what your body already knew: If the music's right, you can bounce from side to side (or jump up and down like a crazy person) with the best of them, but if choreography's involved, you, for the love of Shakira, cannot dance. But nowadays, dance fitness programs (Zumba being the most popular) are trying to convince us that, yes, we can dance and we can burn 600-1000 calories doing simple moves that are accessible to all types of fitness enthusiasts, even if we don't know what a chasse is and, truthfully, don't even want to know. So here's the level you're looking for: you can handle more than doing grapevines back and forth, but if there are body rolls involved, they'll probably look a little bit like those shoulder circles you do after a long day hunched over your laptop. Anything with the words "strip" or "sizzling" may require more sass than you can muster when you're tripping over yourself, but bonus points if the music is infectious and it doesn't even feel like you're working out until you pass out that night and wake up sore the next day. Vulnerable joints (like knees, shoulders, hips) benefit from exercising with kettlebells, too. The motion keeps them smooth and the muscles around them get stronger and can protect them better. The only critical aspect of kettlebell training is that you have to be very careful in the beginning! You shouldn't start using higher weights until you are able to perform every exercise perfectly with a "lighter" kettlebell. The risk of injuries is high if you have a bad posture during the exercise (especially if your back isn't straight).

Darn. Catchy! Much to my embarrassment, the incessant humming progressed, and, as if my iPhone had been briefly operated by someone else's hands, "We Can't Stop" somehow ended up on my running playlist. During my third morning run to this newly-improved (questionable) playlist, I came to the realization that as much as I was trying not to love this song, it was resonating with me -- and not for a bad reason: I'm drawn to empowering and motivating lyrics when I run , and when I'm running, I actually can't and won't stop. That Miley, she was onto something! I dug around the rest of my music library and realized this "can't stop, won't stop" mentality is actually pretty regular for me.
For Jason Kidd, the fact that most of his team including starters Williams, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett already is putting in extra work to get ready is music to the first year head coachs ears. Yeah, for sure, Kidd said after playing in The Barclays Pro-Am at Liberty National Golf Course in Jersey City Wednesday. To be able to start gelling and getting to know each other [is good], because it is kind of a different team. For the young guys, Mason [Plumlee] and [Tyshawn Taylor], to be out there, [Garnett] and Paul and Joe, it just shows that these guys are going in the right direction, and being very professional. I know during the summer time they could do something else, but to come together for a couple days shows that theyre trying to get ready and they want to win. AP Jason Kidd (left) and Deron Williams.

So I want to be able to skate my whole shift. I want to be able to have quick feet, to be able to jump in the play and never get tired after a 30-second shift. Last year, Letang led the Penguins in minutes per game for the third straight season while being named a Norris Trophy finalist for the first time in his career. It was another impressive campaign for him, but Letang, who signed an 8-year, $58-million contract extension in July, knows he still has a lot of work to do to become the best defenseman he can be and hes putting in the effort for a third straight summer with Chaimberg in Montreal. Here are three short videos of separate workouts of Letang at the Adrenaline Performance Center, courtesy of the NHL. We knew Emily when she was in high school and club and just thought she was great, Myers said. When she went to Lincoln Land, I kept my eye on her and she transformed that program. When I watched her as a freshman there, she really excelled, but the rest of her team was still struggling. The second year, I saw the team playing more like Emily.

Kim Williams of Baylor Tom Landry demonstrates part of a 10-minute workout As I have probably mentioned, I am a counter. Not in terms of arithmetic or how much I weigh or how many hours Id have to work to buy an adorable new outfit or how many grapes constitute a pound, but of minutes spent exercising. I know that 150 is the weekly number recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine, and more is better especially if it includes strength training and flexibility training and intervals and blah blah blah. Admittedly, I get in my share of exercise, some more days than others, some more piddling then others. But Im always on the lookout for these nifty workouts that take mere minutes.

Extreme fitness trend hitting national stride
While the idea of extreme fitness has been around for several years, it's recently come into more public view. Even the most slacking couch jockey is aware of the movement thanks to a seemingly never-ending techno beat of late-night commercials touting DVDs for such intense works outs as P90X and Insanity. P90X, which a promotional website describes as "sweat-inducing, muscle-pumping exercises designed to transform your body from regular to ripped," includes a 12-disc program and nutrition advice. The Insanity program is described at its home page, BeachBody.com, as "the world's most insanely tough work out." Submit a before and after picture to the company and you get a free "Insanity" T-shirt. All the programs work on the same general principle, said Angie Green, a certified trainer for Beach Body, the company behind the programs. The idea is that extremely intense, short workouts focus specifically on different muscles for several minutes followed by a shorter break.

If it is rainy or snowy outside, I would recommend a pair of flirty, pattern-inspired galoshes as a playful alternative. In warmer weather, it's fun to rock a pair of funky ballet flats with solid-colored, tapered stretch pants. Lately I have been loving the new chic spin on an ever-classic hoodie. Whether I'm throwing on a cowl neck or asymmetrical zip-up hoodie, I put it over a vintage burnout long sleeve making it easy to peel off right before I hit the weights. Another favorite wardrobe piece are yoga wraps. I like to layer these over a white vintage burn out tank top and a bright sports bra to create a pulled-together workout outfit.

Barring scandal or surprise, this is the part of the offseason where we resort, like weary desert travelers, to quenching our thirst with the mere mirage of schedule. It's pretty rough. However, the researchers found that despite the mobility of smartphones, high use contributed to a sedentary lifestyle for some subjects. The researchers found that students who spent excessive amounts of time on their cell phones, for as much as 14 hours per day, were not as fit as those who averaged a little more than 90 minutes of cell phone use on a daily basis. The researchers have said that their findings suggest that cell phone use may be able to help gauge a persons risk for a multitude of health issues which are related to an inactive lifestyle. This study has been published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity. It appears that a lot of cell phone use may disrupt physical activity and undermine cardiorespiratory fitness, just like traditional sedentary behaviors have been found to do. It has been found that high frequency cell phone use can disrupt leisure time physical activity and promote sedentary behaviors. Also, relatively high levels of cell phone use may serve as a marker for a broader pattern of leisure time sedentary behaviors such as watching television, playing video games and using the computer, which are independent of cell phone use.
